ADT is a household name for its well established home security systems and widespread marketing. Founded in 1874 as American District Telegraph, the company has secured a top spot in the security system industry after more than 145 years of dedicated service. ADT has offered medical alert systems since 2004, in what seems to be a seamless transition from their security system monitoring.

Equipment

ADT’s has an incredibly simple medical alert product portfolio. It has two dedicated home-based systems and an all-in-one home + mobile system. Every unit includes a pendant or wristband wearable button, two-way communication, monthly monitoring, and activation.

Medical Alert Basic

ADT Medical Alert Basic System

The Medical Alert System from ADT is a simple medical alert system that connects to your home telephone landline. It offers a whole-home coverage range of 300 feet. It features two-way communication but relies on a standard landline telephone service. A base unit is included along with one waterproof pendant or wristband. Home temperature monitoring is also included, but fall detection is not an option with this unit.

It’s worth nothing that the Medical Alert System does not have an option for automatic fall detection.

Medical Alert Plus

Medical Alert Plus is a cellular in-home system, which means it does not need to connect to your home telephone landline.  As with all cellular in-home systems, you’ll want to make sure your home has good cellular coverage to use this system.  Residents in rural areas or other regions with poor cell coverage should chose the Medical Alert Basic system instead.

With a range of 600 feet, the Medical Alert Plus easily covers large homes and yards. It relies on its own AT&T cellular service, so a landline or an internet connection is not needed. The Plus system also includes home temperature monitoring.

For an additional $11.00/month, you can add an optional automatic fall detection button to the Medical Alert Plus. We think automatic fall detection is important and worth the added cost.

On-The-Go

On-The-Go is ADT’s mobile system that uses AT&T’s cellular network. The device comes with built-in GPS technology for location services in the event of emergencies away from home. It has two-way talk capabilities, and fall detection is an optional add-on for an extra charge of $11.00/month.

Both the Medical Alert Plus & On-the-Go offer the ability for customers to add a “Waterproof Wall Mount Button” for additional protection around the house.

Monitoring

Monitoring is where ADT stands apart as a security giant. ADT has more than 18,000 employees and 200 locations across North America. All monitoring centers are U.S. Based & owned/operated by ADT. The average tenure of ADT Medical Alert agents is 7 years. Agents also undergo 200 hours of training to be certified as an ADT agent.

Additionally, ADT’s monitoring centers monitoring centers are certified by The Monitoring Association with the Five Diamond certification.

Pricing

ADT’s systems range from a monthly price of $31.99/month for their Medical Alert Basic landline system, to $39.99/month for the Medical Alert Plus in-home cellular system, and $41.99 for the mobile On-The-Go unit. These prices are for a month-to-month subscription. If you chose quarterly billing, these prices are reduced by $2.00/month.

Fall detection can be added to the plus or mobile units for an additional $11.00 monthly. Additional pendants for spouses come with a one-time charge of $14.99 each, and an extra $5.00 monthly.

Consistent with most medical alert providers, there are no contracts, and annual and quarterly discounts are available. Additionally, ADT offers a discount for online orders, USAA members, and existing ADT customers.

Customer’s are subject to activation fee’s but they are frequently waived via promotions.

ADT charges a one-time $99 activation fee for all of their systems, but they don’t charge you for the equipment itself.

Note that ADT’s website states that the activation fee for each system is only $50, but this strangely switched to a $99 fee when our testers walked through the online checkout.  The fee remained $99, even after we added a promo code mentioned on the product pages.

Overall ADT is one of the more expensive in-home medical alert systems on the market. While their startup costs are lower than some competitors, their monthly monitoring fee is relatively high.

Between startup costs, monthly monitoring fees, plus any optional add-ons, it can be hard to compare the true cost of a medical alert system between companies.

To make it easier to compare, we’ve calculated the true First Year Cost of Ownership for each system we review. That means we sum the startup cost (including shipping fees) with the cost for 12 months of monitoring.

For landline systems, here’s how Life Alert compares to others.
